The Lakme Fashion Week 2023 in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India has officially kicked off at the Jio World Garden in Mumbai. The first day of the event, which was held on March 9, was dedicated to eco-fashion, highlighting the importance of sustainability in the fashion industry. Here are the key takeaways from Day 1:

A Platform for Emerging Designers:

INIFD Gen Next 2023 winners, KoAi, KoyToy, Hiro, and Rudrakash Dwivedi showcased their collections on the runway. KoAi’s easy prints and airy silhouettes, KoyToy’s bright colours and cool motifs, Dwivedi’s “Scintilla” collection made from metallic trimmings, and Hiro’s clothes inspired by the post-apocalyptic world with smart layering techniques such as stone washing, ruching and smocking, were all shown at the event.

S for Sustainable Saris:

Designer Anavila Misra presented her collection “Dabu,” which showcased her beautiful handwoven saris. Misra, who has been in the industry for over 10 years, has created her version of the classic drape, featuring modern, light, and authentic designs. The collection focused on block printing, vegetable dyeing, and muted tones with raw draping and styling.

Cool Casuals:

Doodleage, a Delhi-based label, showcased a collection of chic separates made from recycled materials and upcycled wastes that represented the 90s vibe with floral prints, solid colours, and denim. Bodice by Ruchika Sachdeva was also featured, presenting a collection of pleated shirt dresses, flared trousers, and asymmetrical tops perfect for day-to-night outfits.

Celebrity Appearances:

Actress Rakul Preet Singh walked as the showstopper for designer Shruti Sancheti, dressed in a cool Khadico-ord set. Actor Vijay Varma walked for Divyam Mehta, and model-turned-actress Neha Dhupia was the muse for the INIFD launchpad. Other celebrities spotted at the event included Sonali Bendre, Konkana Sen Sharma, and Mandira Bedi.

The event’s first day showcased how the fashion industry can promote sustainable fashion and encouraged designers to consider eco-friendly practices in their designs. The Lakme Fashion Week x FDCI 2023 event continues to highlight the importance of sustainability and its impact on the fashion industry.
